In contrast with the other main towns, Nicosia stands inland on the Masaoria plain with the Pentadactylus Mountains as its dramatic backdrop. Nicosia is the only divided capital in the world and is a city of contrasts with contemporarily styled buildings ‘rubbing shoulders’ with traditional family-run businesses. 

Nicosia is the administrative, commercial and cultural center of the island and is a sophisticated and dynamic European capital with its high rise offices and chic designer shops. In the heart of the modern city stands its old city walls and within them the old city, much of which is currently being renovated.

The walls were built by the Venetians in the 15th century and are about six kilometers in length built in a distinctive star shape with three gateways and eleven arrow-shaped bastions – each funded by an aristocratic Venetian family. The walls are floodlit at night and as the city is the focus for the island’s culture, in recent years the old stones have resounded to the voices of Pavarotti, Elton John, Diana Ross and many more.
