A remarkable encounter between Ancient Greek Drama and Japanese Theatre No, is taking place, under the directions of the internationally acclaimed Izumi Ashizawa, with the collaboration of the cypriot theatre company Belacqua Theatre, for the play Euripides’ Bachaae. The performance is a part of the International Festival of Ancient Drama 2019. The myth refers to the arrival of god Dionysus in Thebes, in order to impose his worship. King Pentheus refuses to accept it and Dionysus gets revenge, by casting a spell of madness to the women of Thebes, leading to the murder of Pentheus by his own mother’s hands.
